If you’re one of the millions of people who got the new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, you might have noticed that your old wallpapers don’t look great on the new screens. That’s because the iPhone 6’s bigger 4.7 inch screen has a resolution of 750×1334 instead of the iPhone 5/5s’ 640×1136. And The 6 Plus sports a 5.5 inch full HD display. While the panel resolution is 1080×1920, the software actually renders at 1242×2208 and then downscales it to 1080p.
So if you’re looking for a crisp wallpaper for the 6 Plus, you need to look for something that’s at least 1242×2208. And that’s with the perspective zoom off. If you like the parallax effect, the wallpapers need to be even bigger.
But all these are technicalities you don’t really need to worry about, thanks to a couple of apps that present a collection of wallpapers ready for the new Retina HD displays. We’ll also highlight curated collections of gorgeous wallpapers.
First, let’s talk about the apps.
The Apps
Facets
If you watch MKBHD’s videos, you know about Facets. The wallpaper collection with the polygonal and geometrical shapes representing real world objects is a treat.
Wallpapers Plus for iOS 8
Wallpapers Plus for iOS 8 has added what it calls “tons” of new 1080p wallpapers that are compatible with the 6 and 6 Plus. The app’s Categories view is helpful when it comes to sorting.
10,000+ LockScreens with ActiveBlur
If you’re a fan of blurred wallpapers, this app is for you.
Wallpaper.sc has a different category for each iOS device. The site’s iPhone 6 Plus section has more than 2000 wallpapers for example.
Interfacelift.com is another categorical website for iOS wallpapers.
The Curated Blog Posts
We’re going meta here. A curated blog post section in a curated blog post. But I think curated blog posts are the best way to find awesome wallpapers (the last time I say curated blog posts, I promise).
UltraLinx has a selection of 25 awesome wallpapers for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (at 1080p) and just like everything else Oliur does, it’s an epic list, especially if you like colorful backgrounds.
iDownloadBlog has a running wallpapers of the week section that you should check out. I especially like this Mountains issue. And yes, there’s a special link for the iPhone 6 Plus versions.
Everythingidevice has a great collection of 1080×1920 wallpapers. There are some real gems in this collection. Especially the mountains, space, and mountain plus space related wallpapers (Okay, I admit, I love mountains).
